Role of the Local Media

I was thrilled to have three excellent guest to talk about the role of the local media in a democracy. This is not something to be complacent about. It’s so important in a democracy, that it’s included in our constitution:

Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(a) freedom of conscience and religion;

(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and

(d) freedom of association.

Then also, it’s fundamental to being able to sustain a democracy. This from the BBC:

Free press

One of the important rights in a democracy is a free press. This means that:

  • People who report the news should be allowed to do their jobs without the government telling them what to do.

  • Journalists should be safe to investigate and report on news stories without fear of being punished for what they report.

End of rant. Listen in as Neil Godbout, Darrin Rigo and Will Peters and I enjoy a chat about this: Role of the Local Media
